The precession of the equinox
There is a big difference between Western and Vedic astrology that often creates confusion. Western astrology is based on an imaginary zodiac who begins with the vernal equinox at 0 ° Aries. Western astrology has never taken this precession into account and each year the equinox precessess further with approximately 50 seconds. Vedic astrology does take account of this precession.
Approximately around the birth of Christ, this equinox was exactly 0 ° Aries and back then both systems (Western and Eastern) synchronised with each other. Meanwhile, however, more than 2000 years later, the vernal equinox precessed every year approximately 50 seconds backwards. Oriental astrology took this into account - not the western - and both systems were increasingly varied. Currently there is a discrepancy of about 23 ° between the two systems. This difference is indicated by the term 'ayanamsa'. A western Sun at 13 ° Aquarius is in India a Sun at 20 ° Capricorn. All planets, ascendant and midheaven precess in this way about 23 °.

It is important to remember that in India the zodiac is based on real constellations as seen in the sky. In the West, however, it is based on a symbolic zodiac that no longer refers to the real sky constellations. Both systems have their value. It is my experience that Western astrology has a mainly psychological valuable, while Vedic astrology explains the more spiritual and karmic accents. I have long practiced western astrology but because of my innate affinity with the east and my Dharma practise, my interest currently lies in Vedic astrology.
Knowledge of both the western and the eastern system can only enrich. Furthermore, I believe that some westerners, like myself, will identify themselves more with the Vedic system. I have the impression that this strong connection has to do with previous incarnations in the east.
Certainly, it requires an openness of mind to turn your entire horoscope upside down and to look at it from an entirely new point of vieuw, another ascendant, Sun - and Moonposition etc. But it can also be a revelation, a discovery of new opportunities or a confirmation of a problem issue in your life.
Astrology, however, whether it's Western or Eastern, does not give a final and binding judgement. Within our earthly existence there's always the freedom of choice. Possibilities of growth are offered, suggested ... But in the end it's your choice whether you take on these opportunities or not.
